Pandemic-created organization broadens its reach to help students

ELYRIA — She used to have a fully functional garage, and office.

Her sister had a usable dining and living room.

Then, Elyria resident Tammy Koleski turned "I" into "we" and started the nonprofit Wee Care Closet, which donates items to students throughout Lorain County.

The women may have given up some space, but they’ve made a lot of room for helping those in need, and they hope others help out as the group hosts its first fundraiser Thursday.

What truly started the organization was hand sanitizer and the pandemic.

Koleski, who works in real estate, had just ordered 2,000 bottles of hand sanitizer and then the world came to a standstill. She didn’t know what she would do with all of it, but knew she couldn’t use it all. So she started calling around and ended up donating it to the fire department and nursing homes.

“Afterward, I thought, ‘Wow, that felt great,’” she recalled.
